Fast fashion is a business model where clothing brands quickly produce large amounts of
trendy, low-cost clothes to keep up with the latest styles. New collections are released
very often, encouraging people to buy more and replace items quickly instead of wearing
                                them for a long time.

The focus is on speed, low prices, and high sales.

Environmental impact

Producing clothes uses huge amounts of water, energy, and raw materials. Factories also
create pollution through chemicals and carbon emissions. Because many cheap, trend-based
items are thrown away after only a few wears, fast fashion adds to landfill waste and
                                textile pollution.

Social impact

Many garments are produced in low-income countries where workers may face long hours, low
wages, and unsafe working conditions. The pressure to produce clothing quickly and
cheaply can lead to unfair labor practices.

Overconsumption

Fast fashion promotes overconsumption, making people feel they constantly need to buy new
clothes to fit in or follow trends. Understanding these impacts helps us make more
                                responsible and sustainable choices.

A garment goes through many stages: design, material sourcing, production, transport,
use, and disposal. Each stage creates consequences. The longer we use a piece of
clothing, the more we reduce the overall impact of these stages.

Impact is not only about production — it is also about behavior. Buying frequently
increases demand and speeds up the cycle of production. Asking questions like “Do I
really need this?” or “How often will I wear it?” changes our role from impulsive buyer
                                to conscious consumer.

cycle, creating pressure to constantly update our wardrobe. Choosing differently — for
example swapping, repairing, or reusing — promotes a culture of value over volume.

created autark.berlin as an online platform that makes sustainable fashion consumption
                                easy, practical, and actually fun.

We offer short courses, podcasts, blog articles and even games — because we believe
learning about fashion should feel empowering, not overwhelming.

Our mission is to show that everyone can build smart habits when it comes to fashion
consumption — without giving up style or joy.

Second hand isn’t compromise — it’s a glow-up.

Why throw it away when you can turn it into something amazing? Upcyling clothes is one of the most powerful and creative ways to fight fashion waste, protect the planet, and express yourself – all at once. It’s fun, affordable, and makes a real difference.

Why Upcycling Helps the Planet

The fashion industry is one of the most polluting in the world. Fast fashion produces millions of tons of waste each year — and most clothes end up in landfills or are burned. Upcycling fights back:

Less waste: You keep clothing in use instead of tossing it.
Saves resources: Making a new pair of jeans uses up to 7,000 liters of water. Upcycling uses zero.
Reduces CO₂: No new production means fewer emissions.

Why It Benefits Society

Upcycling isn’t just good for the planet — it supports people and local communities:

Strengthens local craft & small brands: Many upcycling projects are run by independent makers and social enterprises.
Makes fashion more inclusive: No big budgets or trends needed — just creativity.
Empowers people through skills: Sewing, mending, designing — upcycling helps people learn hands-on, valuable skills.

Why It’s Great for You

Unique style: No more wearing what everyone else wears. Upcycling = one-of-a-kind looks.
Learn new skills: From sewing to dyeing to embroidery — it’s a creative challenge.
Save money: Turn what you already own into something new.
Feel good: Wearing something you rescued or remade gives you pride and purpose.

You don’t need to be a fashion designer to create something amazing — just start with what you already have. Every stitch counts. When you upcycle, you’re not just making clothes — you’re making change.

How to Get Started in 5 Simple Steps

1. Choose one item you no longer wear — maybe it’s damaged, boring, or just not “you” anymore.
2. Find inspiration: Search Pinterest, Instagram, or YouTube for simple upcycling ideas (e.g., crop tops from old shirts, tote bags from jeans, bleach dye techniques).
3. Gather basic tools: A needle, thread, scissors, fabric glue or patches. You don’t need a sewing machine to begin.
4. Keep it simple: Start small — try a patch, a cut, a knot, or even just rolling up sleeves.
5. Make it yours: Add your own flair — embroidery, paint, pins, or fabric scraps.

Final Thought

Upcycling is about slowing down, reconnecting with your clothes, and turning fashion into a force for good. Whether you’re restyling a shirt or turning a dress into a skirt, you’re part of a growing movement that says: Fashion can be fun, fair, and sustainable — and it starts with your next DIY project.

You open Instagram “just for a second” — and 20 minutes later, you’ve saved three outfits, clicked on a discount code, and added something to your cart. Sound familiar?Welcome to the scroll trap — where endless content meets effortless shopping. Social media platforms are designed to keep us engaged, but that often means fueling impulse buying and unsustainable consumption habits.

Let’s break the cycle. Here’s how to shop more consciously, protect your mental space, and embrace sustainable fashion in a digital world.

The True Cost of Fast Fashion

The fashion industry is responsible for about 10% of global CO₂ emissions and significant water and resource pollution (UNEP, 2019).

Fast fashion — cheap, trendy, and mass-produced clothing — thrives on overproduction and waste. Social media accelerates this, pushing influencer hauls, sponsored posts, and “limited time” offers directly to your feed.

According to the Consumer Advice Center NRW, young users are especially vulnerable to this kind of targeted marketing.

Build Your Digital Awareness

Start by asking:

Is this content authentic or sponsored?

Who benefits from me clicking this link?

Is this brand greenwashing?

Helpful tools and platforms:

Good On You — brand sustainability ratings

Fashion Revolution — transparency in fashion

These help you see through marketing and make informed choices.

Curate Your Feed

You are what you scroll. Unfollow accounts that promote overconsumption and start following:

Sustainable brands

Slow fashion activists

Secondhand and upcycling platforms

Use tools like Screen Time or the Forest app to reduce mindless scrolling and set limits.

Shift to Sustainable Habits

Instead of impulse buying:

30-Day Rule: Wait a month before buying non-essentials.

Capsule Wardrobe: Build a minimalist wardrobe with versatile, timeless pieces.

Try Alternatives: Rent, swap, or buy secondhand. Check out
Vinted or Kleiderei.

What You Gain

Mindful shopping doesn’t just benefit the planet — it benefits you:

– A more personal, intentional style
– Fewer impulse purchases = more savings
– Less clutter, more clarity
– Support for ethical and fair fashion

Most importantly, you regain control over your decisions — instead of letting an algorithm decide what you want next.

Our Takeaway

You don’t have to escape the internet — just use it differently. With stronger information literacy, a curated digital space, and small changes in shopping behavior, you can break free from the scroll trap and be part of a more sustainable fashion future.

Fashion Revolution Week is an annual campaign week that brings together the world’s largest fashion activism movement for seven days of action. This year, from 22 to 27 April 2025, we will work together to reinvent a just and fair fashion system for people and the planet.

Fashion Revolution Week takes place every year in the week around 24 April. This date is the anniversary of the Rana Plaza collapse in 2013.

2025 marks the 11th edition of Fashion Revolution Week.

Rana Plaza, a building in Bangladesh, housed a number of garment factories that employed around 5,000 people. The people in this building produced clothing for many of the world’s biggest fashion brands. More than 1,100 people – mostly young women – died in the collapse and a further 2,500 were injured, making it the fourth largest industrial disaster in history.

The fashion industry is a significant contributor to environmental degradation, primarily due to the extensive use of chemicals in textile production. These chemicals not only harm ecosystems but also pose serious health risks to workers and consumers.
Impact on the Environment and Society

The chemical burden of the fashion industry affects not only air and water but also the people working in garment factories. In countries with lenient environmental regulations, such as Bangladesh or China, workers are often exposed to toxic chemicals without sufficient protection. These chemicals can cause skin conditions, respiratory issues, and long-term health problems.

Another serious concern is water pollution caused by wastewater from textile production. Dyes and solvents, in particular, end up in rivers and lakes, contaminating water sources and harming aquatic life. For example, azo dyes, widely used in the textile industry, are banned in some countries, but they are still commonly found in the production of cheap clothing.

Are There Chemicals in Sustainable Products?

As more consumers turn to sustainable products to support the environment and society, the question arises whether these items are free of harmful chemicals. Unfortunately, the answer is not always clear: Even sustainable textiles can contain chemicals, as the term “sustainable” does not necessarily guarantee chemical-free production. However, certifications like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or OEKO-TEX ensure that the textiles meet specific environmental and health standards.

Tips for Consumers

1. Check Certifications: Look for labels like GOTS or OEKO-TEX, which guarantee that the clothing was produced under environmentally friendly conditions and is free from harmful chemicals.

2. Material Choices: Opt for natural materials like organic cotton, linen, or wool. These are often less chemically treated than synthetic fibers like polyester or nylon.

3. Second-Hand Clothing: Buying second-hand clothing is one of the most effective ways to reduce environmental impact. No new chemicals are used in production, and existing clothing is reused, reducing the demand for new resources.

4. Buy Less: Reduce your consumption of fast fashion. Choosing fewer, higher-quality pieces that last longer is better for both the environment and your health.

DEEP DIVE CERTIFICATES

Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)

GOTS is a leading global standard for textiles made from organic fibers. It sets comprehensive environmental and social criteria for the entire textile supply chain, ensuring that products are not only made from organic materials but also processed sustainably. To achieve GOTS certification, a textile product must contain at least 70% certified organic fibers. The standard prohibits the use of harmful chemicals such as toxic heavy metals, formaldehyde, and aromatic solvents. Additionally, GOTS mandates the implementation of environmental management systems, including proper wastewater treatment practices. Social criteria are also integral to GOTS, requiring adherence to fair labor practices and safe working conditions throughout the production process.

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100

Established in 1992, the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is an independent certification system that tests textile products at all stages of production for harmful substances. Products bearing this label have undergone rigorous testing for over 1,000 toxic chemicals, including banned azo dyes, formaldehyde, cadmium, and nickel. The testing criteria are updated annually to incorporate the latest scientific knowledge and legal requirements. The certification is divided into four product classes, with stricter requirements for items in closer contact with the skin, such as baby garments. By choosing OEKO-TEX® certified products, consumers can be assured of textiles that are safe for human health. citeturn0search2

Blue Angel (Blauer Engel)

Introduced in 1978, the Blue Angel is Germany’s official environmental label and the world’s first ecolabel. It certifies products and services that are environmentally friendly and meet high standards of health protection. For textiles, the Blue Angel ensures that products are made from materials produced with minimal environmental impact, free from harmful chemicals, and manufactured under socially responsible conditions. The label takes a holistic approach, considering the entire lifecycle of a product—from raw material extraction to production, use, and disposal. This comprehensive evaluation provides consumers with reliable guidance when selecting eco-friendly textiles.

For consumers, these certifications serve as trustworthy indicators of a product’s environmental and social credentials. They offer assurance that the textiles have been produced with consideration for ecological sustainability and human health.

By making informed choices and opting for certified products, consumers can actively contribute to reducing the negative impacts of the textile industry and support the movement towards more sustainable fashion practices. Just try and find your way!

In recent years, secondhand fashion has seen a significant surge, driven by growing awareness of the environmental impacts of fast fashion and the increasing demand for affordable, unique, and sustainable clothing options. With younger generations leading this change, secondhand shopping is no longer just a trend but a key part of the move toward circular fashion.

The Environmental Impact of Fast Fashion

The fashion industry is responsible for about 5% of global carbon emissions, with textile production in the European Union alone generating around 270 kg of CO2 emissions per person annually. This is equivalent to the carbon footprint of driving a gasoline-powered car for 21 days. As the fashion industry faces increasing scrutiny over its environmental footprint, consumers are turning to secondhand fashion as a more sustainable alternative.

The Benefits of Secondhand Fashion

1. Environmental Advantages

Secondhand fashion helps significantly reduce carbon emissions. By buying pre-owned garments, we can cut CO2 emissions by 25% on average. Furthermore, extending the life of clothing reduces the need for new resource-intensive production. Over a garment’s lifetime, buying secondhand saves around 8.41 pounds of CO2, 16.48 kWh of energy, and 88.89 gallons of water compared to buying new. These simple shifts in consumer behavior can create profound environmental benefits.

2. Affordability

Secondhand shopping offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional retail, making it an attractive option, especially for younger generations like Gen Z and Millennials. Not only do these consumers save money, but they also find unique and one-of-a-kind pieces that allow them to express their individuality, setting them apart from mainstream fast fashion trends.

3. Social Impact

Buying secondhand supports a circular economy and helps local thrift stores and non-profits. These platforms often partner with charitable organizations, creating positive social impacts while also giving shoppers a chance to contribute to environmental sustainability.

The Growing Popularity of Secondhand Fashion

Data reveals that 2 out of 5 items in Gen Z’s wardrobes are pre-owned. Millennials and Gen Z are drawn to secondhand fashion for its affordability and eco-friendly benefits, with sustainability playing a key role in their purchasing decisions. However, with 39% of sustainability claims in fashion being potentially false or misleading, secondhand fashion offers a trustworthy alternative, as buying used garments is inherently sustainable.

The secondhand fashion market is growing rapidly, valued at $177 billion in 2022, and expected to more than double to $351 billion by 2027. Online resale platforms like Poshmark, The RealReal, and Depop have played a huge role in this growth, making it easier for consumers to buy and sell pre-owned clothing from the comfort of their homes.

Circular Fashion: The Future of Fashion

Circular fashion aims to create a closed-loop system where clothing is reused, repaired, or recycled, thus reducing waste and the environmental cost of textile production. Participating in this movement—by purchasing secondhand or renting clothing—helps extend the life cycle of garments and reduce the need for new resources.

Conclusion

Secondhand fashion is more than just a passing trend; it’s an essential part of a sustainable future for the fashion industry. With growing awareness and market support, secondhand shopping is reshaping the way we consume clothing. As more consumers, especially Gen Z and Millennials, embrace this eco-friendly alternative, the fashion industry is likely to continue moving towards sustainability, affordability, and circular practices.

Sources:

Global Fashion Agenda 2021: “The State of Fashion”

ThredUp 2022: “Resale Report”

The RealReal 2023: “Sustainability Report”

Ellen MacArthur Foundation 2017: “A New Textiles Economy”

Fast Fashion’s Environmental Impact

edited with ChatGPT

The fashion industry is one of the most influential sectors globally, but it also comes with significant environmental and social challenges. As we move toward a more sustainable future, it’s essential to understand how the fashion industry can align with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations in 2015. These goals

aim to promote a more equitable, environmentally friendly, and inclusive world. By transforming how we produce and consume fashion, we can contribute to these goals and create a positive impact.

The Impact of the Fashion Industry

Fashion’s environmental footprint is substantial. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the fashion industry is responsible for about 10% of global CO2 emissions, more than the entire aviation and shipping industries combined. Furthermore, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation reports that 92 million tons of textile waste

are generated annually, much of which ends up in landfills or is burned instead of being recycled. These figures underline the urgent need for change in how we approach fashion.

Additionally, the global clothing production has doubled in the last 20 years. Today, consumers purchase 60% more clothing than they did two decades ago, but they wear these items half as long. This rapid cycle of production and consumption exacerbates the environmental crisis, contributing to overconsumption of resources and waste. The industry also has a massive impact on water resources. The World Resources Institute estimates that the fashion industry consumes 93 billion cubic meters of water annually, which is enough to meet the yearly water needs of 5 million people.

How Fashion Can Contribute to the SDGs

Despite these challenges, the fashion industry can play a crucial role in advancing several SDGs, particularly those related to sustainable consumption and production, decent work and economic growth, and climate action.

1. Sustainable Consumption and Production (SDG 12)

The fashion industry is one of the leading contributors to unsustainable production practices. However, consumers and brands can work together to change this. By purchasing clothing that is made from sustainable materials or by choosing second-hand items, individuals can drastically reduce their environmental footprint. Patagonia, for example, is a brand known for its commitment to sustainability, using recycled materials in its products and ensuring that the production process minimizes environmental harm. Similarly, Reformation focuses on eco-friendly practices, such as using deadstock fabrics and providing full transparency about the environmental impact of its collections.

2. Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8)

The fashion industry often operates in developing countries where labor conditions are poor, and workers are underpaid. Supporting ethical fashion brands is crucial in ensuring better working conditions. Brands like People Tree lead by example, paying fair wages and offering safe working environments. By choosing ethical brands, consumers can help foster better job opportunities and wage equality in the fashion sector.

3. Climate Action (SDG 13)

Fashion’s contribution to climate change is significant, with its carbon footprint being a major concern. According to the Carbon Trust, if just 1% of global consumers reduced their fashion consumption by 10%, we could save 1.4 million tons of CO2 annually. This is a

simple but powerful way to reduce emissions. Brands like Stella McCartney are working to reduce their carbon footprint by using sustainable materials like organic cotton and recycled polyester, helping to lead the way in eco-conscious fashion.

4. Reduced Inequality (SDG 10)

Fashion should celebrate diversity and inclusion. Brands like Savage X Fenty by Rihanna are breaking down barriers by offering a wide range of sizes and promoting diverse body types in their campaigns. This kind of representation is crucial for creating a more inclusive

world where everyone feels valued and seen.

What Can You Do?

As consumers, we have the power to make a difference. Reducing our consumption of fast fashion, supporting brands that prioritize sustainability, and rethinking how we care for our clothing are all simple actions that can have a profound impact. Veja, a brand committed to transparency and environmental responsibility, offers shoes made from organic cotton and recycled materials, showing that sustainability is possible at all levels of production.

By making conscious choices, we can help reshape the fashion industry and contribute to the global effort to meet the SDGs. Together, we can create a future where fashion supports the planet, workers, and communities around the world.
