A Legacy of Streetwear Excellence

Since its inception in 1994, Iriedaily has been synonymous with Berlin’s streetwear scene. The brand’s roots are deeply intertwined with the city’s vibrant subcultures, from skateboarding to graffiti art. Iriedaily’s designs are a reflection of Berlin’s diversity, blending functionality with a bold, urban aesthetic that resonates with a global audience.

What started as a small, independent label has grown into a well-respected name in the fashion world, without losing sight of its core values. Iriedaily’s collections are characterized by their unique blend of casual cuts, striking graphics, and a keen attention to detail, all while staying true to the brand’s motto: “Stay Different.”

Commitment to Sustainability

In an era where fast fashion dominates, Iriedaily has taken a stand for sustainability. The brand has made significant strides in ensuring that its production processes are environmentally friendly and socially responsible. Their approach to sustainability is multifaceted, focusing on materials, production, and certifications that align with the highest ethical standards.

GOTS Certification

One of Iriedaily’s proudest achievements is its GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification. GOTS is the world’s leading standard for organic textiles, covering everything from the harvesting of raw materials to environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing. This certification ensures that Iriedaily’s products are not only made from organic fibers but are also produced under fair labor conditions, without the use of harmful chemicals.

By adhering to GOTS standards, Iriedaily ensures that its products are safe for both consumers and the planet, reinforcing its commitment to high-quality, sustainable fashion.

Fair Wear Foundation Membership

Iriedaily’s dedication to ethical production extends beyond environmental concerns. As a member of the Fair Wear Foundation, the brand is actively involved in promoting fair labor practices throughout its supply chain. The Fair Wear Foundation is an independent organization that works with brands, factories, and trade unions to improve working conditions in the garment industry.

By partnering with the Fair Wear Foundation, Iriedaily is committed to transparency and accountability in its production processes. This collaboration ensures that the workers who produce Iriedaily’s clothing are treated with dignity and respect, receiving fair wages and working in safe conditions.

PETA-Approved Vegan

In addition to its GOTS certification and Fair Wear Foundation membership, Iriedaily is also PETA-Approved Vegan. This certification signifies that no animal-derived materials are used in the production of their clothing, making Iriedaily a cruelty-free option for conscious consumers.

The PETA-Approved Vegan label is a testament to Iriedaily’s commitment to ethical fashion, catering to the growing demand for vegan-friendly products in the streetwear market.

A Vision for the Future

As Iriedaily looks to the future, its commitment to sustainability and ethical production remains stronger than ever. The brand continues to innovate, exploring new ways to minimize its environmental impact while maintaining the high standards of quality and style that have made it a favorite among streetwear enthusiasts.

At autark.berlin, we’re thrilled to celebrate the arrival of Kleiderei in Berlin! This innovative concept is transforming the way we think about fashion and sustainability. With stores now in Cologne, Freiburg, Stuttgart, and Berlin, Kleiderei offers a unique solution for fashion enthusiasts who want to stay stylish while making a positive impact on the environment and society. How, read further.

The Concept: Flexibility and Variety

At Kleiderei, you can find the perfect outfit for any event – whether it’s a party, a family gathering, or just a spontaneous must-have addition to your wardrobe. The concept is a clothing library which allows you to borrow clothing as member. The best part? You can swap your borrowed pieces as often as you like, with no extra costs or limits. This not only keeps your wardrobe fresh and exciting but also helps reduce the need for constant new purchases. Members pay 29€ for 4 pieces or 39€ for 6 pieces monthly.

Embracing Sustainability Together

Kleiderei encourages slower consumption by promoting the shared use of clothing. This practice conserves resources significantly. By joining the Kleiderei community, you actively participate in reducing the environmental footprint of fashion. Every swap means fewer new clothes need to be produced, which translates to less water usage, fewer chemicals, and reduced carbon emissions.

Say Goodbye to New Purchases

With Kleiderei, you can experiment with different styles, rediscover forgotten trends, and find timeless looks that perfectly complement your existing wardrobe. This approach helps you avoid unnecessary new purchases, thus contributing to a more sustainable fashion cycle.

Avoiding Fashion Mistakes

We’ve all been there – buying an item only to realize it doesn’t quite fit our style. With Kleiderei, you can try out each piece first and decide later if it’s a quick fling or a lasting love. This helps you make more informed decisions, reducing the chances of regrettable purchases and ensuring that your wardrobe only consists of pieces you truly love.

Finding Your Favorite Pieces

When you do find that perfect piece, you’re in luck! As a member of Kleiderei, you get special discounts on your favorite items. This ensures that you can buy pieces that you know will be cherished parts of your wardrobe for a long time, reinforcing the idea of purchasing with intention and care.

Circular Economy and Less Waste

By participating in Kleiderei’s model, you are contributing to the circular economy. This means you’re helping to save countless clothing items from ending up in landfills and significantly cutting down CO2 emissions. It’s an easy and impactful way to make a difference.

Join the Community

Givn is a Berlin-based fashion label that specialises in sustainable fashion. The brand was founded in 2018 by designer and entrepreneur Moritz Biel & André Hoffmann, who aiming to produce fashion in an environmentally friendly and ethical way.

Givn’s concept is simple: high-quality clothing produced under fair conditions and made from sustainable materials. The brand uses only certified organic cotton (and recycled materials such as polyester and nylon. In doing so, Givn relies on the use of modern technologies to keep the ecological footprint as small as possible.

Another important aspect of Givn’s sustainability is the avoidance of waste. The label only produces in limited quantities and does without seasonal collections. Instead, Givn works with timeless designs that are durable and can be worn in the future.

Givn products are not only sustainable, but also aesthetically pleasing. The designs are minimalist and timeless, which suits a wide target group. The garments are designed to suit any occasion – from work to a special occasion.

Besides sustainability, social responsibility also plays a big role at Givn. The brand only works with manufacturers who pay fairly and adhere to strict standards. Production takes place in Europe to ensure high quality and control.

Givn is also very transparent about its working conditions and supply chain. On the label’s website, customers can find a detailed list of suppliers and production partners as well as information about the materials used. This allows customers to see for themselves how the garments are produced and what impact they have on the environment.

The fashion label Givn is a good example of how fashion and sustainability can be reconciled. By focusing on sustainable materials and fair working conditions, the label sends a strong signal for a more environmentally friendly fashion industry. In doing so, Givn shows that sustainability does not have to be at the expense of design – on the contrary, sustainable fashion can be stylish and timeless.

The collections are designed in the Berlin atelier and produced in Europe. Lots of their clothes are GOTS certificated and peta vegan approved. Since last year, you also can buy pre-loved clothes in the online shop.

Overall, Givn is a fashion label worth supporting. Customers interested in sustainable fashion will find a good selection of high-quality garments that not only look good, but are also good for the environment. Givn is a pioneer in the industry and shows that sustainability and fashion can go hand in hand.

Photo Copyright by GIVN Berlin

There are now many fashion labels that are committed to sustainability. One of them is the Berlin fashion label Malaikaraiss. Founder and namesake Malaika Raiss has been focusing on sustainable production methods and material selection since the label was founded in 2010. But what exactly does sustainability mean for the label and how does it implement it?

An important aspect for Malaikaraiss is the use of ecologically and socially compatible materials. These include, for example, organic cotton, Tencel or recycled polyester. The label also attaches importance to transparent and fair production when selecting suppliers. For example, it works with a textile factory in Portugal that uses renewable energy and its production is certified by GOTS and OEKO-TEX.

Another important issue for Malaikaraiss is the durability of its garments. Instead of focusing on short-lived trends, timeless and high-quality designs are created that can be worn for a long time. The quality of the materials used also helps to ensure that the garments last a long time. To increase longevity, the label also offers repair services.

In addition to the choice of materials and production, Malaikaraiss also attaches importance to keeping the label’s impact on the environment as low as possible. For example, unnecessary packaging is avoided and shipping is climate-neutral via DHL GoGreen.

But the label is also committed to sustainability in everyday life. For example, paper is used instead of plastic bags in the Berlin stores and the employees are regularly trained on sustainability topics.

The importance of sustainability for Malaikaraiss is also reflected in the collections. In the current collection, for example, the label increasingly relies on upcycling, using fabric remnants from previous collections. The colour palette of the collections is also geared towards dyeing in a way that conserves resources as much as possible.

But even though Malaikaraiss places a lot of emphasis on sustainability, the label is not purely an eco-fashion label. Rather, the garments are a successful combination of timeless design and sustainable production. This is also reflected in the label’s popularity. Malaikaraiss is now known not only in Germany but also internationally and is appreciated by many fashionistas.

In conclusion, Malaikaraiss is an example that sustainability and fashion are perfectly compatible. The label shows that a sustainable production method not only protects the environment, but also leads to high-quality and durable garments. Malaikaraiss thus proves that sustainability is not a trend in the fashion industry, but an important changemaker.

A mixing of luxe textiles that emphasize the playfulness of spirit and style, while thoughtful tailoring is resonant with the careful construction that marks the German intellect and soul of the brand. Signature design elements in bodysuits highlight youthful femininity, while opulent tulle dresses present a strong yet accordant contrast with embroidery which is a hallmark of the brand.

The garments themselves are all lovingly handmade from the highest quality materials in our Berlin atelier, ensuring a responsible method of production that is critical to the message of sustainability that is so important to the brand.

Why did you decide to produce locally?

Sustainability is part of our design philosophy and it is very important for the fashion industry. However, sustainability has many facets from the raw materials to the local production of garments. This was very important for us from the beginning. We saw this process as part of our value. Amongst other things, we want every tailor, seamstress or pattern-maker to be paid accordingly for their work and to have good benefits in the atelier. That is why we decided to go this route, so what we can inspect every garment and monitor all production sites ourselves.

Does local production play a role in your success?

Success is secondary for us, primarily our vision is to promote and preserve German craftsmanship. Fashion made in Germany is far too small in the economically strong Germany.

What skills are necessary for local production? How did you acquire the knowledge?

I had a dual course of studies in fashion design and ladies’ tailoring at the FahModa Academy for Fashion and Design in Hanover. In 2012, I also attended the Kraków School of Art and Fashion Design. I am a trained dressmaker / tailor and therefore have a very good knowledge of the production of clothing. Because of my training I consider all options for a garment. The prototyping and pattern development takes place entirely in our studio in Berlin.

What challenges have you encountered in implementing local production?

Coming from an artisan handcraft background myself, quality is very important to me, so balancing all the components is always a bit of a challenge.

Do consumers from the region value your products?

All our customers are grateful for the transparent handling of our clothing. Many customers have had their clothes made to measure in our atelier. This means that we have a personal connection to every customer.

dannyreinke.com

photo copyright by Danny Reinke

MYKITA sets standards for sustainable urban production in the fashion industry with its modern manufactory. The Berlin brand has been designing & producing beautiful eyewear under one roof since 2003, today at MYKITA HAUS. The purposeful products combine craftmanship and high technology. Innovation and sustainability are the key of the MYKITA DNA. MYKITA pioneers the industry with its holistic approach. Founder Moritz Krüger was driven by a clear aesthetic vision and the willingness to produce something himself, to be curious and to constantly question the status quo. By the novelty of the first product design, the founder were forced to set up their own production and to develop the machines and processes for the specific needs.

MYKITA has introduced the term “modern manufactory” to describe the multidisciplinary approach of combining art and high-tech processes. In addition to the departments at MYKITA HAUS that accompany the product from conception to final quality control, the modern manufactory involves external experts to form a self-contained manufacturing network.

The frames are handcrafted at MYKITA HAUS in Berlin, with some parts produced in the company’s own manufacturing facility within the EU. Integrity and loyalty are core values at MYKITA and the suppliers of components and technology are long-standing, trusted partners.

MYKITA takes an interdisciplinary approach to driving innovation and developing technology for sustainable options: MYKITA MYLON, for example, is a mass-produced eyewear collection that uses 3D printing technology for low-waste manufacturing.

From the function, fit and look of the eyewear to the variety of styles available in the collections, everything has been developed so that everyone can find their ultimate eyewear – a functional design object for everyday wear that has high personal value and appeal due to superior comfort and fit, as well as distinctive, timeless aesthetics.

Intelligent, purposeful design is the heart of the sustainable products. Every aspect of the eyewear frames and collections has been crafted with the aim of creating long-lasting companions – personal objects to be used and treasured every day.

Efficient use of resources and care for the environment are a part of the brandsl’s holistic manufacturing philosophy. The brand works with selected retailers and offers free repairs, adjustments and professional eyewear cleaning to ensure a long product life.

MYKITA is based on a Made To Order (MTO) business model; only what can be sold is produced, reducing energy and material waste. Independent, owner-managed production – a real rarity in the eyewear industry – together with a fully integrated delivery network is designed to minimise transport and logistics, i.e. the carbon footprint.

Today, in-house production enables independence in terms of production and ownership as well as transparency, important success factors in the fashion industry. The modern manufactory is the primary source of inspiration for expertise, so that ideas can be tested and implemented directly, as expertise is immediately available.

We hope that other designers are inspired by the MYKITA way and that local customers are able to support these great products.

mykita.com

photo by MYKITA campaign SS 2021/ modern manufactory

Trippen, the sustainble internationally renowned avant-garde shoe brand from Berlin, was founded three decades ago. We are pleased that Michael Oehler, founder of Trippen, took the time to answer our questions about the advantages of local production, the challenges as well as the role of local customers.

Setting up its own production facility near Berlin allows Trippen to offer its customers personalisation and reordering – important success factors in the fashion industry today. Even more important for us is that Trippen takes social responsibility in its local community.

The “made in Germany” is an important pillar for the internationalisation success of the label. About 80% sales are made internationally. Even in the local shops, mostly tourists buy the shoes. Local customers need to be aware of the treasure that is right in front of them, to make local production the key to sustainability. So let’s get to know Trippen…

What is Trippen all about?

Berlin, 1991. Inspired to translate a new vision of sustainability into avant-garde shoes, Angela Spieth and Michael Oehler founded Trippen. Embodying the spirit of their reunited city, the designers forged a distinct style through an interplay of restraint and creativity.

Rubber sole moulds were reduced to a few styles chosen for optimal comfort while leather uppers offered limitless possibilities for creative expression. The signature design language that has since earned Trippen its international cult status emerged from this framework, to which the label remains true today—playfully referencing fashion’s shifts while transcending them with a timeless aesthetic.

Each new style adds a point of distinction to the brand’s living archive, which contains over 1600 models available for re-order. In honour of its customers’ creativity, Trippen’s bespoke ‘Made for You’ service invites individuals to personalise their pair by selecting both leather style and sole colour.

Why did you decide to produce locally? What advantages do you see in it?

Social responsibility is foundational to the Trippen universe. In 1998, the brand established its own production facility in a former GDR shoe production area in Zehdenick, Brandenburg.

Manufacturing in-house allows fabrication to occur on demand, reducing waste while optimising quality control and flexibility. Experimental concepts can be tested quickly, generating truly unique designs.

It also allows Trippen to keep its pricing honest. Investments in marketing and packaging are reduced to a minimum, allowing revenue to go directly towards premium materials and labour costs. Ensuring wages are equitable and working conditions fair is top priority, especially given Trippen’s commitment to reducing unemployment and promoting social integration in its local community. During the ’90s, migrants who had fled the Balkan Wars were welcomed into the workforce—efforts that today extend to recent refugees from Afghanistan, Somalia, and Syria, as was recognised by Trippen’s 2018 Brandenburg Integration Award.

What skills are necessary for local production? How did you acquire the knowledge?

As we produced in the beginning in Germany and Italy as well, we build up an infrastructure in Italy for machinery and materials. Step by step we brought machinery and technics to Germany. Today we still working mostly with this infrastructure. We always designed for the potential of our team, the collection and the team was growing together.

What challenges have you encountered in implementing local production?

The hardest is to fill the production the whole year round.

Trippen is a pioneer when it comes to the combination of sustainability and local production. The insights show that in-house manufacturing demands infrastructure, know-how, and full order books. It gives you the possibility to take over responsibility for your value chain and make a difference in local work communities.

www.trippen.com

www.instagram.com/trippen.official

photos copyright by Trippen

Trippen Spring/Summer 21 — Back to the Future: Art Direction & Set Design: Jakub Kubica Photos: Jose Cuevas Styling: Rudolfs A.

We have already looked at sourcing raw materials for the garment industry from a city’s waste. Cities consume 75% of the world’s natural resources (Ellen McArthur Foundation, 2021). Besides the materials used, the way clothes are made also has a big impact on the environment. A pair of fast fashion jeans has travelled up to 50,000 km across several contingents by the time it is bought and used in our country. This is not a sustainable production method. How can the fashion production be made sustainable and local?

In Germany, only about 10% of the textile production is left. Many manufacturers have relocated production and the associated environmental and social problems abroad, mostly to Asia. The textile industry is one of the oldest and, in terms of number of employees and turnover, one of the most important branches of the manufacturing industry. It manufactures textile products from fibres, such as spun yarns, woven fabrics, felts, nonwovens, stitch-bonded fabrics and knitted goods, which are further processed by the clothing industry, among others. It is upstream of the clothing industry. In Central Europe, there are almost no companies left in which all production stages from raw material to end product are carried out. The companies in the textile and clothing industry have a strong division of labour and are internationalised. Almost no clothing is produced in Germany any more, although some of the largest clothing producers are located in Germany (Wikipedia).

Sustainable, local garment production requires local, sustainable textile production (incl. recycling/reprocessing). The stages of textile production are drivers of environmentally harmful emissions. Yarn preparation (28%) and dyeing and finishing (36%) in particular play a central role and must be taken into account in the area of sustainable production. A T-shirt made from organically grown cotton can consume a lot of chemicals in the finishing stage, which are not very healthy for humans or the environment.

Local garment production has not completely disappeared. Pioneers like MarcCain show how production in Germany can succeed with technology.

Numerous creative people are also lovingly handcrafting small collections that can be counted as slow fashion.

Berlin is home to charming labels that are committed to sustainability and produce locally. Among them are designers who work with upcycling methods. For example: Buki Akomolafe (bukiakomolafe.com), BRACHMANN (brachmannofficial.com), Danny Reinke (www.dannyreinke.com), Kollateralschaden (www.kollateralschaden.com), Natascha von Hirschhausen (nataschavonhirschhausen.com), The Tribe (www. thetribe.berlin), Trippen (de.trippen.com), MYKITA (www.mykita.co), Working Titel (www.workingtitlestudios.com), After March (www.helloaftermarch.com), Bis es mir vom Leibe fällt (bisesmirvomleibefaellt.com), Benu (www.benu-berlin.com), Erie Berlin (www.erieberlin.com) (Projekt Zukunft).

These are nice examples. Digitalisation and automation could make this kind of fashion available to even more people.

How can we succeed in designing and producing new collections in a future city, with and around the customer? We imagine digital, collaborative design interfaces and micro-factories that produce on-demand, i.e. only what is “needed”. This prevents tons of stock from not being sold. This production would be flexible and decentralised. The more the customer is involved in the design, the higher his emotional attachment to the clothing will be. And he will value it more and wear it longer. Overall, micro-factories have only a small production capacity. This model only works if there is also less consumption, which is also good for the environment.

Local fashion production would be very transparent and visible to every customer. We have already reported on pioneers like unmade that make this possible. In Germany, consumption fell by 6.1% in 2020 due to the Corona pandemic. The most in 70 years (IW). We are adaptable.

In the next post, we will take a deep dive into labels and their production methods.

Follow us at twitter and/or instagram.

We are interessted in circular textile production processes and using „waste“ as ressources for something new. In urban spaces, like our home town Berlin, we see are lot of interessting sourcing opportunities for the production of clothes and shoes. Cities are main driver of consumption. They produce enormous amounts of waste and pollution (circular.berlin). What if, we use that waste and transform it into something good. To source and produce locally seems to be a good starting point to create a possitive impact. Sustainable production comes with the usage of natural materials or recycling of materials. By recycling plastic waste and other waste, resources can be conserved. Let’s do a thought experiment and think about waste streams in urban spaces, which could be a sourcing opportunity for textile production. Think about plastic bottles, alt paper, coffee grounds, organ gene shells, dogs hair or used textiles.

PLASTIC

In 2019, 6.28 million tonnes of plastic waste were generated in Germany, mostly due to private housholds. By law, the recycling rate for plastic packaging should be 63% in 2022. Germany is the biggest exporteur of plastic waste in Europe. We could start to think about taking responsibility and try to make something good with that. Of course, the best way would be, to engage in zero waste initiatives and adapt our byuing behaviour. We will always consume something. For exemple unifi (REPREVE Polyester & Nylon) is using post-consumer plastic waste for the production of recycled nylon and polyester, which could be used in textile production.

ALT-PAPER

14.8 million tones alt paper were collected in Germany in 2019. The waste paper return rate lies by 78%, which is quite good. But the generale consumption of paper is rising in the last years. The per capita consumption of paper, cardboard and carton is higher in Germany than in any other G20 country. The rapidly increasing quantities of packaging in online trade in particular contribute to the high consumption. Paper has a fairly high energy consumption during production. The best way is to reduce our paper usage. When it comes to textile production, we could recycle alt-paper into cellulosic based fiber yarns, like Ioncell from Helsinki is doing.

USED CLOTHING

According to the Association for Textile Recycling, the amount of old textiles collected in Germany is about 750,000 tonnes. 50 per cent of the collected textiles can be reused. These textiles are usually exported. Another four per cent are further processed into cleaning rags or other recycled products (e.g. sound insulation mats). On the other hand, according to the Federal Association of Consumer Organisations, 1.6 million tonnes of textiles are consumed each year. This corresponds to a per capita consumption of 20 kg. This means that the Germans have the highest consumption of textiles worldwide. There are different companies working at transorming post-comsumer textile waste into new ones. Evrnu for exemples uses post-consumer cotton garments to produce cellulosic based NuCycl fibres. And Ioncell could do so either. Aquafil (Econyl) uses post-consumer textile waste, to produce nylon 6 fibres. Kleiderly from Berlin transforms old textiles in f.eg. plastic hangers.

COFFEE GROUNDS AND ORANGE SHELLS

In Berlin there are lots of coffee houses which serve fresh brew coffee and also fresh made organe juice. It is possible to use the coffee ground for the production of S.Café (Singtex) nylon or the organge shells could be used to produce a vegan leather or silk alterative.

DOGS HAIR

It is possible to use combed-out undercoat of dogs as wool alternativ in textile production. In Germany, 80 tonnes of dog wool, a high-quality raw material, are thrown away every year. Berlin has many dogs. Modusintarsia creates Chiengora, a dog hair based wool fibre.

CONCLUSION

Germany produces so much waste plastic, paper, used textiles. Before thinking to re-use that waste, we have to think about our consumption habits. First and foremost, our consumption should be mindful. Less consumption, less waste. That should have the greatest effects and is inevitable.

When we look at the type of waste streams in Berlin, we clearly see, that there are enourmous potential to use these waste streams from plastic, alt-paper, used clothes, biobased waste like coffee grounds or organge shells and dog hair as sourcing chance for textile production in urban spaces. In the further areas of berlin corn, hemp, flax sheep wool could be natural sourcing alternatives to. Of course, we would need the appropriate factories in the city. Berlin has the know how and a vital chemical industry as well as recyling facilities to do so.

Sources:

https://textile-network.de/de/Fashion/Von-wegen-Orangenhaut

https://www.evrnu.com/nucycl

Top Casino Bet Games to Play Today

https://unifi.com/

https://www.aquafil.com/de/

https://www.aquafil.com/de/sustainability/econyl-garn/

https://www.evrnu.com/nucycl

https://www.remap-berlin.de/blog/zero-waste-blog/97

https://www.umweltbundesamt.de/daten/ressourcen-abfall/verwertung-entsorgung-ausgewaehlter-abfallarten/altpapier

https://www.nabu.de/umwelt-und-ressourcen/abfall-und-recycling/22033.html

https://www.boell.de/sites/default/files/2019-11/Plastikatlas_2019_3._Auflage.pdf

https://www.destatis.de/DE/Presse/Pressemitteilungen/2021/03/PD21_N016_51.html;jsessionid=9C96987F2D86E734055E7F35FFA35CE2.internet741

https://www.bettina-hoffmann.info/de/blog/2019/10/kleine_anfrage_papierverbrauch.php

www.circular.berlin
